I want to help other people, but I do not know how I want to do it. At pillars of the community I witnessed how the community of Encanto were being brought together and helped as a whole. I didn't think there was any comparison to that of how much Public Defenders help. But I was wrong. Public defenders have an overwhelming case load: 1 public defender fights for 1000 people a year. Now where Pillars can represent a whole community each public defender is obligated to officiate a chunk. With an enormity of clients to accommodate for I thought public defenders would think of their clients as files rather thank actual people. But this is also wrong. My mentor Theresa always prioritizes how her client is feeling. She'll always be congratulating on the small steps they accomplish, even if they'd slipped up a little. She also asks them about their lives and what they enjoy to do. One of her clients had completely his life around and he was near-crying when he showed up in Theresa's office. One thing I noticed was everyone is very nervous: hunching over, hands shaking, not speaking too much, but Theresa always finds ways to relax her clients.
In these photos I had to travel with Theresa to Torington court to represent three other clients. These clients had no flies different from ones in Waterbury but Theresa will always prioritize them in their time of need.
